Family Reunions – West coast

Thinking about gathering the family?

Here are some great spots in the western US where I have brought my own family or sent clients…

Grand Canyon, South Rim

Family reunions at Grand Canyon National ParkFor Christmas we gathered on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

It was easy and inexpensive to get to, flying in/out of Las Vegas, and for lodging, we booked the Buckey O’Neill Cabin, built back in the 1890’s by William “Buckey” O’Neill, one of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders who devoted his earlier years to the establishment of the Grand Canyon Railway.  His cabin is one large bedroom and an outer room with big stone fireplace and ample room to play games, make simple breakfasts, and gather for sundowners, a mere 20′ from the rim of the canyon.

This one-of-a-kind large historic cabin abuts smaller new cabins as well as motel-style rooms at the Bright Angel Lodge so you can book as many beds as you need for your gang.

During the day, hike INTO the canyon via the Kaibab Trail,  walk the geology Trail of Time, visit the Kolb Brother’s photography exhibit, or meet the California Condors.

For dinner, you can order pizzas for a rim sunset picnic or – if you’re off season and space allows – grab a campsite for a dinner BBQ.  And for your grand finale, the El Tovar dining room is worth the splurge!

Moab Under Canvas

Book a sweet Suite Tent for the parents, with an attached tipi for the kids. Pack in provisions for sundowners and join the communal bonfire after dark.  And you have the perfect desert venue for your next family gathering!

During the day, you can jeep into Arches for sunrise, float the Colorado River, and – if you’re looking for a big WOW! – go hot air ballooning over the national parkland.

Oak Creek Canyon cabins by Sedona

Thanksgiving 2016 I  booked cabins at the Butterfly Garden Cabins in Oak Creek Canyon for my extended family’s Thanksgiving.

We flew in/out of  Phoenix, only 1+ hours away, and booked 4 separate cabins for privacy and also for kitchen space.

…because we planned to cook our own Thanksgiving meal!

Each of my sons volunteered for a different course – Doug made steamed mussels which we enjoyed creekside along with Will’s home brewed beer.   Alix, my daughter-in-law, made some of her southern favorites like candied yams, and Tom contributed dessert.

During the days, we hiked the creek trail and hired a 4-wheel Jeep for a red rock tour to Sedona’s vortexes.

Beachhouse in Hawaii

My clients have booked this gorgeous spot on the Kona side of the Big Island.   Between the villa’s 4 bedrooms and the property’s carriage house, there is ample room for their teenage kids and both sets of grandparents.

During the day, they are chartering a snorkel sail with Captn Eric and flying, doors-off, on a helicopter over the red-hot lava flow of the volcano.  At night, they are snorkeling with the massive 25′-wingspan manta rays and enjoying dinners on their private porch at sunset.

House boating on Lake Powell

3 generations and 1 boat make 4 days of unforgettable fun!

Fishing.  Campfires.  Hiking.  Jet skiing to Rainbow Bridge.

It’s an ideal family reunion spot.  Read all the details here….

Why are these spots special?

They’re easy to get to… offer exclusive venue for your family to bond, but space for individuals to find privacy… most have kitchens to prepare family-style meals (prepared by you or a hired chef)… and proximity to fun activities that appeal to diverse age groups.
